British Stand Up Paddle Association Announces 2nd Round of 2009 Series at Gwithian Beach

BSUPA is pleased to announce the entry forms for the Second Round of the 2009 Series at Gwithian Beach near St Ives, Cornwall are now online.

To be held on the weekend of 6th/7th June hosted by Sunset Surf.

We will be running a SUP Surfing Contest (providing the waves are good enough). Regardless of waves an SUP Distance race will be held for all categories (men’s, women’s and juniors) There is a max board length of 12’6” on all BSUPA distance events held this year.

Results for both the Surf and Distance events will go towards the final 2009 Championship.

A series of short sprint races may be run for fun if time allows. This format was trialed for the first time at West Wittering. It was a lot of fun for both spectators and those taking part.

Please be sure to enter in advance as there will be a £5 admin cost for anyone entering on the day. All entrants must as always be paid up members of BSUPA.

As with the West Wittering event, BSUPA are offering 2 weeks competition membership for £10 for those not wanting to become full members. This must be done on the weekend of the competition so this will include the £5 handing fee. If after the competition you want to increase your membership to the full year, the £10 will be deducted from the membership cost.

Oney Anwar wins the
Queensland Titles in Australia

Rip Curl Team rider Oney Anwar won the Queensland titles and has qualified himself for the Australian titles.
Oney Anwar born August 17th in Sumbawa, Lakey Peak, has been charging through his career ever since he first stood up on a surfboard.

Growing up at Lakey Peak and surfing mental waves on an everyday basis, Oney has had the opportunity to develop an incredible style in surfing. When Oney first joined the Rip Curl team in 2003 he was already looking to become a world class surfer at the age of 10.

Winning various events and always with the great attitude of a professional, Oney Anwar has taken it to the next level.
Oney has been in Queensland Australia since 2007 as part of Rip Curls International Grommet development program, surfing and competing in the Palm Beach Boardriding Club.

Doing what any teenager does, Oney goes to school at the Palm Beach Currumbin High School and joins the professional athlete training program in the afternoons.

Watch out for more and look for that name.
If Oney wins this Australian title he will be charging towards the world title.

South American Beach Games confirmed in Uruguay 0

The South American Sports Organization (ODESUR) has confirmed that the First South American Beach Games will be held from December 3 to 13 in Montevideo and Punta del Este, Uruguay and Surfing is going to be an official sport in this historic occasion.

Recently, Surfing has taken big strides on the long path towards Olympic Games participacion, something first requested by multi Olympic gold medallist Duke Kahanamoku in 1920. In October 2008 Surfing debuted in the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) sanctioned Beach Games, part of the Olympic Movement, that were held in Bali, Indonesia. Surfing was the most popular sport according to visitors’ votes on the official event webpage.

Now, in the first ever South American Beach Games, the Olympic Movement has invited Surfing once again in its newest and more and very promising event.

Fernando Aguerre, ISA President, said about the upcoming event: “The ISA is proud and honored to accept to organize the surfing competitions on this Beach Games. This time aided by the Pan American Surfing Association (PASA) our organization will show the world that Surfing is a key sport for today’s youth.

Surfing and its attractive lifestyle are at the centre of beach culture around the world. The inclusion of surfing in these inaugural Beach Games is a very wise move by ODESUR. Millions of surfers in South America are going to be very supportive of these Games.”

Dates are set. The famous Punta del Este will witness the best surfing of South America from December 9 to 13, 2009 in the waves of Montoya.
