KwaZulu- Natal, Ballito –  Organisers of the 5 Star ASP World Qualifying Series Mr Price Pro have decided to call the event off for the day due to extreme and dangerous surf conditions. The surfers will meet at 06h30 tomorrow morning for a possible 07h00 start.

DANGEROUS SURF CONDITIONS FORCE ORGANISERS TO PLACE EVENT ON HOLD

KwaZulu- Natal, Ballito –  Surfers woke to a spectacle of powerful 2.5 – 3 meter (8-10ft) surf pounding the Ballito coastline forcing organizers to look at the possibility of moving the Women’s 5 Star ASP World Qualifying Series Mr Price Pro Ballito to Tinley Manor, twenty minutes North of Ballito.

With conditions deemed extremely dangerous, organisers have placed the event on hold until 10h00. Should the conditions improve, the event will get underway with one heat of local Trials, followed by the Women’s Round of 60.

Hawaiian junior surfing sensation Carissa Moore, 16, will kick-start this year’s prestigious ASP World Qualifying Series event when she takes on fellow Hawaiian Gabi Cope, Bronwyn Coote (Zaf) in Heat 1.

South African hopefuls Sarah Baum (Warner Beach), Heidi Palmboom (Bluff), Tanika Hoffman (Cape Town), Chantelle Rautenbach (Cape Town) and reigning South African Open Women’s Champion Heather Clark (Port Shepstone) will also feature in the Round of 60.

The 5 Star ASP WQS Mr Price Pro Ballito includes 70 local and international female surfers including 11 of the world’s ‘Top 17’. The top seed is Amee Donohoe (Haw) and the highest rated surfer competing in the event is ASP World No. 3 Paige Hareb (NZ).

Jeff Clark sets the record straight on his “Resignation” from Mavericks Contest 0

The press release issued by Mavericks Surf Ventures this week stating that I ‘stepped down’ and I am ‘passing the torch to the next generation’ is wrong. The reality is that I was ousted as Contest Director by the current CEO.

I must also note that, while the company’s news release states that this year’s contest will be held to celebrate ‘the 35th anniversary of Jeff Clark’s first session at the now world-famous break,’ the 35th anniversary is actually next season, in 2010-11. I will not allow the company to use my accomplishment as a marketing tactic.

Effective today, I have resigned from the Board of Directors of Mavericks Surf Ventures.

My vision for the Mavericks Surf Contest has been unwavering: it is about the family of big wave surfers, the spirit of the ocean, and this amazing wave. I never wanted that to be compromised for the sake of money or marketing opportunities. I think that focus is obvious to anyone who knows me or who has seen my priorities over the years.
