ASR show calling it quits 0
The twice annual Action Sports Retailer Convention that has called San Diego home for at least 20 years is calling it quits, citing difficult economic times.
An official with San Juan Capistrano-based Nielsen Expositions, which oversees the trade show, informed the San Diego Convention Center Tuesday of its plans in an e-mail.
“Unfortunately due to the difficult economic environment and the consolidation in the action sports industry, Nielsen Expositions have decided to suspend the production of both ASR events in San Diego indefinitely,” wrote Lori Jenks, vice president of operations for Nielsen Expositions.
The trade show, which twice a year features the latest in surf and skatewear trends, had suffered in recent years a drop in attendance as the recession took its toll on discretionary spending.
Andy Tompkins, vice president of the Nielsen Sports Group, explained on ASR’s Facebookpage why the company was forced to suspend the trade show.
“We are proud to have focused ASR along the California coast since 1981 and will continue to explore ways to do so but it’s time to broaden our efforts for the action sports community beyond the coastline,” Tompkin wrote in his message.
